Target Information

Porcine protein-L-isoaspartate O-methyltransferase (PIMT) is an essential repair enzyme that is widely expressed in various tissues and plays a critical role in maintaining protein integrity. It catalyzes the methylation of damaged aspartyl and asparaginyl residues that have undergone spontaneous isomerization or racemization, leading to the formation of L-isoaspartyl or D-aspartyl residues. These atypical residues can disrupt protein structure and function, potentially leading to cellular dysfunction. PIMT initiates the repair process by converting these damaged residues back to the normal L-aspartyl configuration, thereby preserving protein stability and activity. In pigs, PIMT is crucial for the normal functioning of the immune system, nervous system, and muscle cells. Its activity is implicated in the inhibition of cell apoptosis in neurons and myocardial cells, suggesting a role in health and disease. Moreover, PIMT is associated with the regulation of metabolism and is linked to embryonic development and aging. The enzyme's function extends to the modulation of intracellular signaling pathways, such as the MAP kinase pathway, which is vital for signal transduction and transcription regulation.
