Target Information

Sheep prion protein (PrP) is a central component in the study of prion diseases, particularly scrapie, which is a fatal neurodegenerative disease in sheep. PrP exists in two forms: the normal cellular form (PrPC) and the disease-associated form (PrPSc). The conversion of PrPC to PrPSc is the key event in the pathogenesis of prion diseases. Genetic variations in the prion protein gene (PRNP), especially at codons 136, 154, and 171, are associated with differences in scrapie susceptibility.
