Ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) is responsible for sheep-associated malignant catarrhal fever (SA-MCF), a highly fatal disease syndrome that primarily affects susceptible hosts within the order Artiodactyla. Alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 and ovine herpesvirus 2 are the main and most well-characterized causative agents of malignant catarrhal fever in cattle, deer, bison, and certain other wild and domestic ungulates.
