Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) leads to significant production losses and greatly affects trade. It is caused by the FMD virus (FMDV), a small non-enveloped RNA virus that is part of the genus Aphthovirus within the Picornaviridae family. The virus has seven different serotypes: O, A, C, SAT 1, SAT 2, SAT 3, and Asia 1.
