Target Information
Feline melanocyte-stimulating hormone receptor (MC1R) is a G protein-coupled receptor expressed in melanocytes, primarily regulating pigment production and coat color in cats. It controls the balance between eumelanin (black/brown pigment) and pheomelanin (red/yellow pigment) by interacting with α-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH). Variants of MC1R can lead to different coat color phenotypes, such as black, brown, or red fur. This receptor also plays a role in UV-induced DNA damage repair and has potential implications for skin cancer risk.
