Target Information
Substance P is a neuropeptide that acts as a neurotransmitter and a neuromodulator. It belongs to the tachykinin family of neuropeptides. Substance P was originally discovered in 1931 by Ulf von Euler and John H. Gaddum. It is released from the terminals of specific sensory nerves. SP is found in the brain, spinal cord, and is associated with inflammatory processes and pain. The eleven-amino-acid structure of Substance P was determined in 1971.
