The genus Acremonium (formerly known as Cephalosporium) includes opportunistic soil saprophytes that are environmentally widespread and can occasionally be pathogenic. Acremonium strictum, a saprotrophic species, is commonly found in soil, plant debris, and decaying mushrooms.
