Target Information

Malignant catarrhal fever (MCF) is a deadly systemic illness affecting various species, primarily ungulates. It is triggered by a group of related herpesviruses classified under the genus Macavirus within the gammaherpesvirus subfamily. Alcelaphine herpesvirus 1 (AlHV-1) and ovine herpesvirus 2 (OvHV-2) are responsible for causing MCF in multiple ruminant and cervid species.
