Target Information

The beak and feather disease virus (BFDV) belongs to the Circoviridae family. Like other circoviruses, it features a small, circular single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) genome of approximately 2.0 kilobases, contained within a non-enveloped, spherical icosahedral virion. This virus affects all parrot species from both the Old and New Worlds, targeting the feather follicles as well as the beak and claw matrices. It leads to progressive malformation and necrosis of the feathers, claws, and beak.
