Borna disease (BD) was first identified over 200 years ago in southern Germany as a fatal neurological condition affecting horses and sheep. Borna disease's geographic distribution and host range are more extensive than previously understood. The causative agent, Borna disease virus (BDV), is an enveloped nonsegmented negative-strand RNA virus, noted for its unique replication characteristics.
