Target Information

Astroviruses, classified under the Astroviridae family, were first discovered in 1975 using electron microscopy during a diarrheal outbreak in humans. These icosahedral viruses, measuring between 28-35 nm in diameter, feature a unique five- or six-pointed star-like surface pattern when viewed under electron microscopy. Astroviruses have been detected not only in humans but also in various mammalian species and avian species. Sapovirus, a single-stranded RNA virus from the Caliciviridae family, has been found in shellfish and environmental water samples. This virus has also been identified in several mammals, including swine, sea lions, dogs, bats, and rats.
