Trypanosoma brucei is a species of parasitic kinetoplastid belonging to the genus Trypanosoma that is present in sub-Saharan Africa. Trypanosoma brucei gambiense is responsible for causing slow-onset chronic trypanosomiasis in humans. It is most prevalent in central and western Africa, where humans are considered the principal reservoir. It can also be present in animals such as primates and ungulates.
