Target Information

Porcine circovirus (PCV) is a prevalent virus affecting pigs globally. Known for its small size (~1800 base pairs), circular genome, and environmental resilience, this DNA virus is unique. PCV2 was first isolated in 1997. When pigs are infected with PCV2, they experience viremia of varying lengths, with significant replication and persistence occurring in the macrophages and monocytes of lymphoid organs and the lungs. PCV2 causes PMWS, which results in substantial depletion of lymphocytes; postmortem examination of diseased animals reveals enlarged lymph nodes and abnormal lung tissue.
