Target Information

Rinderpest, also referred to as cattle plague, was a highly contagious viral disease impacting cloven-hoofed animals, primarily cattle and buffalo. The disease presented with symptoms such as fever, oral erosions, diarrhea, lymphoid necrosis, and high mortality rates. During outbreaks, mortality could approach 100% in populations lacking immunity. The rinderpest virus (RPV), belonging to the genus Morbillivirus, is closely related to the measles and canine distemper viruses.
