Target Information

Myelin basic protein (MBP) is a central component of the myelin sheath, a multilayered membrane structure that insulates axons in the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). MBP contributes to the compaction and maintenance of the myelin sheath, which is essential for the rapid and efficient transmission of nerve impulses. The protein is a key target in the study and treatment of demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis (MS), where the immune system mistakenly attacks the myelin sheath, leading to nerve damage and a range of neurological symptoms. MBP is particularly targeted because the immune response in MS can be directed against it, causing inflammation and demyelination.
