Enteroinvasive Escherichia coli (EIEC) are a type of intestinal pathogenic bacteria capable of penetrating colon epithelial cells, replicating inside them, and spreading to neighboring cells using a mechanism similar to that of Shigella, the causative agent of bacillary dysentery.
