Target Information

Equine coital exanthema (ECE) is a highly contagious mucocutaneous disease transmitted venereally. It is characterized by the development of papules, vesicles, pustules, and ulcers on the external genitalia of mares and stallions, caused by equid alphaherpesvirus 3 (EHV-3). This infection is endemic worldwide, primarily spreading through direct contact during sexual intercourse and via contaminated instruments used in reproductive procedures at breeding facilities.
