Target Information

Parainfluenza virus type 3 (PIV-3) is a member of the Paramyxoviridae family, known for causing respiratory infections in a variety of species, including humans and animals. In veterinary medicine, PIV-3 is particularly significant in pigs, leading to respiratory disease and often complicating other infections. The virus primarily targets the respiratory epithelial cells, causing inflammation and damage that can lead to pneumonia. It is transmitted through aerosols and direct contact, making it highly contagious in confined animal populations. PIV-3's surface glycoproteins, such as the hemagglutinin-neuraminidase (HN) and fusion (F) proteins, are key for viral attachment and entry into host cells.
