Target Information
Porcine circovirus type II (PCV2) is a small, circular, single-stranded DNA virus that is the primary causative agent of post-weaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in pigs. The capsid protein VP1 of PCV2 is the main structural protein that forms the viral capsid and is responsible for protecting the viral genome. The VP1 protein is a significant target for antiviral strategies against PCV2 due to its role in virion assembly and its exposure on the virion surface, making it accessible for immune recognition. Inhibiting the function of the VP1 could potentially interfere with the virus's ability to package its genome and infect host cells. Additionally, the VP1 is a primary immunogen that elicits neutralizing antibodies, which underscores its importance in the development of vaccines.
