Target Information
Canine coronavirus (CCoV) is a contagious viral pathogen that affects domestic dogs and wild canids, causing gastrointestinal illness. It is a member of the Coronaviridae family, specifically within the genus Alphacoronavirus. CCoV primarily targets the epithelial cells of the small intestine, leading to cell damage and villous atrophy. This results in malabsorption, diarrhea, and dehydration in infected dogs. The virus is transmitted through the fecal-oral route, and its rapid replication within the intestinal cells contributes to the severity of the clinical signs.
