Target Information
Canine osteocalcin is a vitamin K-dependent protein predominantly produced by osteoblasts and plays a significant role in bone mineralization. It is also recognized for its extra-skeletal functions, particularly in glucose metabolism and energy homeostasis. In dogs, osteocalcin is measured as a marker of bone formation and is thought to regulate bone mineralization. Recent studies suggest that it may also be involved in the development and progression of canine osteosarcoma, a malignant bone tumor, with potential implications for diagnosis and prognosis. The protein's serum levels can indicate the active role it plays in global metabolism, with lower levels correlating with higher activity in metabolic processes.
