Target Information
Porcine proteasome subunit alpha type 8 (PSMA8) is a distinct subunit of the 20S core proteasome, which is responsible for the degradation of proteins tagged with ubiquitin. This protein plays a pivotal role in maintaining cellular protein homeostasis by regulating the degradation of damaged or unneeded proteins. PSMA8 is particularly important in the biological processes of differentiation and spermatogogenesis, as it is involved in the proteolytic activities that occur during spermatogenesis. In pigs, PSMA8 contributes to the proper progression of meiosis I, which is essential for male fertility. It has been shown that PSMA8 is required for the assembly of the 20S core proteasome, which is crucial for the degradation of meiotic proteins such as RAD51 and RPA1 at late prophase I. The absence or dysfunction of PSMA8 can lead to a block in meiosis I, resulting in male infertility.
