Target Information

Canine transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a pivotal role in various biological processes, including cell proliferation, differentiation, and immune responses. In the context of cancer, TGF-β has a dual role, it acts as a tumor suppressor in the early stages of carcinogenesis but can also promote tumor progression, metastasis, and immune evasion in later stages. It is particularly influential in the generation of myofibroblasts, also known as cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs), which significantly contribute to tumorigenesis. TGF-β induces the maturation of myofibroblasts from precursor fibroblasts, stimulating the invasion of tumor cells through the secretion of proliferative, proinvasive, and proangiogenic factors. In canine melanoma, TGF-β1 has been identified as a therapeutic target due to its immunosuppressive effects and its ability to stimulate cytokine production and Tregs induction in canine peripheral blood mononuclear cell cultures.
