Target Information

Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) is a lentivirus that affects the domestic cat species, causing a progressive immunodeficiency similar to HIV in humans. The P24 protein, also known as p24 capsid protein or p24gag, is a structural component of the virus and plays a crucial role in the formation of the viral core. The P24 protein is highly conserved among FIV strains and is a target for both the cat's immune system and diagnostic tests. It is produced in large quantities during the viral replication process, making it a reliable marker for the presence of the virus in an infected cat. The P24 antigen is often used in enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISA) to detect FIV infection, as the cat's immune response to the P24 protein is a reliable indicator of exposure to the virus.
