Target Information

Feline herpesvirus (FHV), specifically feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1), is a common and highly contagious pathogen that affects domestic cats, leading to upper respiratory infections, conjunctivitis, and oral ulcers. Also known as feline viral rhinotracheitis, the disease can result in severe clinical signs, particularly in kittens, and can be fatal if not treated. FHV-1 targets epithelial cells of the respiratory and ocular mucosa, causing cell lysis and inflammation. The virus enters the host cells through endocytosis and then replicates in the nucleus, leading to the production of viral proteins and progeny virions. Key viral proteins include glycoproteins gB, gC, and gD, which are involved in viral entry and immune evasion.
