Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5) is a protein kinase distinct from other CDKs due to its ability to operate independently of the cell cycle. Unlike most cyclin-dependent kinases, CDK5 is active during the post-mitotic phase and is predominantly expressed in the brain.
