Target Information
Canine IL-5 (Interleukin-5) is a cytokine primarily produced by activated CD4+ T helper type 2 cells, mast cells, and eosinophils. It plays a critical role in the differentiation and activation of eosinophils; increasing expression of surface C3bi complement receptors, stimulating release of superoxide anion, and potentiating Ig-induced eosinophil degranulation. These IL-5 effects lead to profound and lifelong eosinophilia in transgenic mice. IL-5 is also involved in priming basophils for increased histamine production and leukotriene generation. It has a critical role in eosinophil activation, making it a target for experimental treatment of diseases associated with excessive eosinophils, including certain allergic diseases in dogs.
