Chicken interleukin 6 (IL-6) is a multifunctional cytokine that plays a crucial role in regulating immune responses, acute-phase reactions, and hematopoiesis in chickens. It is a pro-inflammatory cytokine produced soon after the induction of the innate immune response and is involved in the synthesis of acute-phase proteins and the regulation of T lymphocyte differentiation and activation. IL-6 signaling is mediated by two components: a specific α-receptor, which is a ligand-binding subunit, and a signal transducer common to this cytokine family, gp130. The cytokine is important for growth and differentiation activity in various cell types, including B cells, T cells, and hepatocytes. In chickens, IL-6 has been shown to influence hepatocyte-stimulating factor in the acute-phase response and plays a vital role in chronic inflammation and the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, particularly inflammatory bowel disease.
