Target Information
Porcine hepcidin is a liver-expressed antimicrobial peptide and iron-regulating hormone that plays a significant role in the innate immune system and iron homeostasis. It functions as a hormonal regulator by controlling iron efflux from target cells via ferroportin (FPN1), which is internalized and degraded upon hepcidin binding. Hepcidin exhibits antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi, and its expression can be induced by bacterial infections.
