Target Information
Swine calcium-activated chloride channel regulator 1 (CLCA1) is a secreted protein that belongs to the CLCA family. It is known to activate calcium-dependent chloride channels, such as TMEM16A, and possesses zinc metalloproteinase properties. In pigs, CLCA1 plays a crucial role in the regulation of chloride transport and mucus production, particularly in the respiratory and gastrointestinal tracts. It modulates epithelial cell chloride currents and is implicated in the pathogenesis of diseases associated with mucus hypersecretion, including respiratory illnesses like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), as well as gastrointestinal disorders. CLCA1 also participates in innate immune responses and has been shown to target lymphatic endothelial cells and cancer cells, suggesting its involvement in immune modulation and potentially, cancer biology.
