Theileria is a genus of parasites within the phylum Apicomplexa, and it is closely related to Plasmodium. Equine piroplasmosis (EP) is a blood-borne disease resulting from infection by the protozoan parasites Theileria equi or Babesia caballi. This tick-borne protozoal illness affects horses, mules, donkeys, and zebras.
