Target Information

Benzopyrene, an organic compound with the chemical formula C20H12, is known for its harmful nature due to its metabolites that are carcinogenic and mutagenic. Compounds like (+)-benzo[a]pyrene-7,8-dihydrodiol-9,10-epoxide, derived from benzo[a]pyrene, can insert themselves into DNA and disrupt the transcription process. Benzopyrenes are classified as both pollutants and carcinogens. In animal studies, ingestion of benzo[a]pyrene has been linked to developmental and reproductive toxicity, including effects on developmental neurotoxicity and immune system function.
