Target Information
Canine aldose reductase (cALR) is an enzyme belonging to the aldo-keto reductase (AKR) superfamily, which is involved in the conversion of sugars to their corresponding sugar alcohols. This enzyme is particularly important in the context of diabetes mellitus, as it helps regulate the levels of sorbitol, a polyol that can accumulate in tissues and contribute to diabetic complications when present in excess. cALR is also implicated in the detoxification of reactive aldehydes, which are harmful molecules produced during oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation.
