Canine SIX homeobox 2 (SIX2) is a transcription factor that plays a pivotal role in the development of various organs, particularly the kidneys. SIX2 is essential for maintaining the self-renewal capacity of nephron progenitor cells, which are critical for the formation of nephrons, the functional units of the kidney. In dogs, as in other mammals, SIX2 is expressed in the metanephric mesenchyme during kidney development, and its expression is maintained throughout this process.
