Target Information

Beta-tubulin, a subunit of the tubulin family, is a critical structural protein that heterodimerizes with alpha-tubulin to form the microtubules essential for a myriad of cellular processes. These microtubules serve as the cellular scaffold, facilitating intracellular transport, maintaining cell shape, and segregating chromosomes during cell division. Beta-tubulin is highly conserved across eukaryotic organisms, reflecting its fundamental role in cell biology. The dynamic nature of microtubules, characterized by their rapid assembly and disassembly, is regulated by various cellular signals and environmental cues. Beta-tubulin, along with alpha-tubulin, is a target for several antimitotic drugs used in cancer therapy, such as taxanes and vinca alkaloids, which stabilize or disrupt microtubules, respectively, leading to the inhibition of cell proliferation.
