Target Information

Porcine 6-phosphofructokinase (PFK) is a key regulatory enzyme in glycolysis, catalyzing the conversion of fructose 6-phosphate (F6P) and ATP into fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F1,6BP) and ADP. This reaction is the first committed step in glycolysis and is subject to multiple levels of regulation to control the flow of glucose through the pathway. The enzyme is allosterically regulated by several effectors, including ATP, which acts as an inhibitor, and AMP, which acts as an activator. This allows the cell to modulate glycolytic flux in response to changes in energy status. The activity of PFK is also influenced by pH, with lower pH values leading to increased enzyme activity, which is important for maintaining glycolysis under acidic conditions that may occur in muscle during periods of high activity.
