Target Information

Porcine catalase (pCAT) is an essential antioxidant enzyme found in pigs that plays a critical role in protecting cells from oxidative damage caused by reactive oxygen species (ROS). This enzyme is particularly abundant in peroxisomes, where it catalyzes the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) into water and molecular oxygen, thereby preventing the accumulation of toxic levels of H2O2 that could damage cellular components. pCAT is a heme-containing protein that utilizes its active site to break down peroxides, making it a key component of the cellular defense system against oxidative stress. Its activity is crucial for maintaining cellular redox balance and is implicated in various physiological processes, including metabolism, immune response, and the aging process.
