Target Information
Porcine hypoxia-inducible factor-proline dioxygenase (EGLN1) is an enzyme that plays a critical role in the cellular response to hypoxia (low oxygen levels). EGLN1 is involved in the hydroxylation of proline residues within the oxygen-dependent degradation domain of hypoxia-inducible factors (HIFs), such as HIF-α. This post-translational modification targets HIF-α for recognition by the von Hippel-Lindau protein (VHL), leading to its ubiquitination and subsequent degradation by the proteasome. In pigs, as in other organisms, EGLN1 likely contributes to the regulation of gene expression in response to changes in oxygen availability. This is particularly important in tissues with high metabolic demands or in situations where oxygen supply may be limited, such as during embryonic development, in muscle tissues, or under conditions of stress.
