Target Information
Porcine iduronate 2-sulfatase (IDS) is a lysosomal enzyme that plays a critical role in the degradation of glycosaminoglycans (GAGs), specifically heparan sulfate and dermatan sulfate. This enzyme is essential for removing sulfate groups from the non-reducing end of sulfated alpha-L-iduronic acid residues within these GAGs. The absence or deficiency of IDS activity leads to the accumulation of these GAGs within cells, a hallmark of Mucopolysaccharidosis II (MPS II), also known as Hunter syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that presents with a range of symptoms including cognitive impairment, coarse facial features, and skeletal deformities.
