Plasmodium gallinaceum, a species within the genus Plasmodium (subgenus Haemamoeba), is responsible for causing malaria in poultry. The infection of domestic chickens with this avian malaria parasite poses a significant threat to the poultry industry, leading to economic losses in both the quality and quantity of meat and egg production.
