The genus Mycoplasma, part of the class Mollicutes, consists of the smallest known self-replicating prokaryotes. Mycoplasmas are small Gram-negative bacteria. Mycoplasma gateae has been isolated from both healthy and ill cats. It is a nonhemotropic form of Mycoplasma.
