Vibrio harveyi is a Gram-negative, bioluminescent marine bacterium belonging to the genus Vibrio. It is rod-shaped, motile with polar flagella, facultatively anaerobic, halophilic, and capable of both fermentative and respiratory metabolism. V. harveyi is found free-swimming in tropical marine waters and exists commensally within the gut microflora of marine animals. It acts as both a primary and opportunistic pathogen for marine species, including Gorgonian corals, oysters, prawns, lobsters, common snook, barramundi, turbot, milkfish, and seahorses.
