Target Information

Canine myo-inositol oxygenase (MIOX) is a non-heme di-iron oxygenase enzyme located in the kidney, primarily responsible for the catabolism of myo-inositol, a key component in cellular membrane turnover and osmoregulation. MIOX plays a crucial role in glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as in the regulation of insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells, thereby influencing the glucose and lipid metabolism in insulin-sensitive tissues such as liver, muscle, and adipose tissues. It is also involved in the conversion of myo-inositol to D-chiro-inositol, which is important for various metabolic pathways. The activity of MIOX is implicated in the excretion of inositol in urine, which can serve as a biomarker for metabolic disruptions, including diabetic kidney disease. Understanding MIOX's function in dogs is essential for managing metabolic health and could provide insights into therapeutic targets for restoring myo-inositol levels and improving metabolic outcomes.
