Target Information
Chicken N-ethylmaleimide-sensitive factor (NSF) is a member of the ATPases associated with various cellular activities (AAA) protein family, which is broadly required for intracellular membrane fusion processes. As an ATPase, NSF plays a crucial role in the disassembly of SNARE (Soluble NSF Attachment Protein) complexes, which are essential for the fusion of vesicles with their target membranes, a process vital for cellular communication and transport. In chickens, NSF is particularly important for maintaining the functionality of the nervous system, as it aids in the recycling of SNARE proteins involved in neurotransmitter release at the synapses. The enzyme's activity is regulated by soluble NSF attachment proteins (SNAPs), which facilitate the binding of NSF to SNARE complexes, allowing NSF to use the energy from ATP hydrolysis to disassemble these complexes and recycle SNARE proteins.
