Target Information

Porcine optic atrophy 1 (OPA1) is a protein that plays a critical role in the maintenance of mitochondrial function in pig cells. It is particularly important for the organization of the mitochondrial inner membrane, where it contributes to the formation of the cristae, the invaginations that compartmentalize the inner membrane and increase its surface area for efficient energy production. OPA1 is involved in the regulation of mitochondrial dynamics, which includes processes such as fusion and fission of the organelles. These processes are essential for the proper distribution of mitochondria within cells and for the maintenance of their overall health and function. Disruptions in OPA1 function are associated with various diseases, including optic atrophy, a condition characterized by the degeneration of the optic nerve.
