Target Information
Porcine superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) is a mitochondrial enzyme that plays a critical role in the defense against oxidative stress by catalyzing the dismutation of superoxide radicals into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. This enzyme is essential for maintaining cellular redox balance and preventing mitochondrial dysfunction, which is particularly important during oocyte maturation in pigs. SOD2 is highly expressed in porcine oocytes and is regulated by SIRT3, a mitochondrial sirtuin that deacetylates SOD2, enhancing its antioxidant capacity. The deacetylation of SOD2 by SIRT3 is crucial for preventing oxidative stress and maintaining mitochondrial function during oocyte maturation. Inhibition of SIRT3 leads to a decrease in deacetylated SOD2, resulting in ROS accumulation and oxidative stress-induced apoptosis.
