Target Information

Sheep osteocalcin is a major non-collagenous protein in bone synthesized exclusively by osteoblasts. It plays a crucial role in bone metabolism, existing in two forms, carboxylated (cOC) and undercarboxylated (ucOC). cOC promotes bone mineralization and increases bone strength, while ucOC is considered endocrinologically active and may have functions in multiple end organs and tissues. Osteocalcin is also linked to the regulation of whole-body metabolism, reproduction, and cognition, with undercarboxylated osteocalcin acting in a feed-forward loop to increase β-cell proliferation, insulin production, and secretion.
