Target Information

Marek's disease is a highly contagious viral cancer affecting chickens, caused by an alphaherpesvirus known as Marek's disease virus (MDV) or Gallid alphaherpesvirus 2 (GaHV-2). Chickens infected with GaHV-2 may harbor and spread the virus throughout their entire lives. Gallid alphaherpesvirus 1 (GaHV-1) is transmitted through respiratory secretions, spreading via inhalation of droplets or contact with contaminated surfaces.
