Target Information
Influenza B virus, a significant cause of respiratory illness, possesses a surface glycoprotein known as Neuraminidase (NA). This enzyme is crucial for the virus's ability to spread within the host, as it cleaves sialic acid residues on the cell surface and released virions, facilitating the virus's exit from infected cells and preventing agglutination. Neuraminidase is a prime target for antiviral drugs due to its role in the viral replication cycle. Drugs such as zanamivir and oseltamivir are designed to inhibit NA activity, thereby blocking viral release and reducing the spread of the virus within the host. These inhibitors mimic the structure of sialic acid, competing with the natural substrate for binding to the enzyme's active site.
