Target Information
The respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) fusion (F) protein is a critical surface glycoprotein that plays a pivotal role in the virus's entry into host cells. It is responsible for mediating the fusion of the viral envelope with the host cell membrane, allowing the viral genetic material to be released and initiate infection. The F protein is a prime target for both vaccine development and therapeutic intervention due to its essential role in the viral life cycle and its exposure to the host immune system. The F protein undergoes a conformational change upon activation, which is necessary for its fusion activity. This change is induced by the interaction with host cell receptors or environmental conditions such as low pH. Targeting the F protein with monoclonal antibodies or small molecule inhibitors can potentially prevent this conformational change and inhibit the fusion process, thereby blocking viral entry.
